January 5-6, 2012 Workshop

Shiprock, New Mexico

Similar to the first workshop, the goal of this workshop was to engage a new group of Dine College Science Pathway Program interns with a science interest in atmospheric science problem solving, both locally on the reservation and globally.  As such, the workshop covered climate change and renewable energy as well as air quality problems and novel measurement tools that could help interested people explore their own air quality.  To the right is a photo from Friday afternoon at the end of the workshop.   Some of the interns are holding the Mpods developed by the CU group.  These tools were developed under NSF support and are part of the MAQS (Mobile Air Quality Sensing System).

Over the two day workshop, the interns used the Mpods to measure local air quality.  In one exercise, they drove to areas that they were interested in measuring the air quality, because they are known pollution sources.  Some of these sources are shown in the Google map we collaborated on.  The map can be edited here, if you would like to add any known or discovered air pollution sources.  One of the interns had also worked on a project called Tox Town, which helps identify pollution sources.
